Behind the scenes of Stockholm at Backstage Hotel

Must read

The cruise to Djurgården from central Stockholm by ferry tram takes about eight minutes. Do not let the proximity of the island mislead you – part of the city’s allure is exactly the fact that you can easily travel around different universes. Home to a couple of museums, the Skansen and Gröna Lund amusement park, Royal Djurgården – that belonged to the royal family since the XVth century – is evolving into a buzzier spot. The latest addition to the island – Backstage Hotel – offers a truly theatrical experience.

Opened in the early fall, the hotel’s concept is quite unique. Basically, the owners want you to immerse into the “behind-the-scenes” kind of atmosphere. Upon entering the inconspicuous two-storey building located right next to Gröna Lund, you’re immediately transported to a design boudoir with elegant décor featuring leather sofas, thick velvet curtains and photographic art pieces that complement the mood. Still, the ambiance is private, cosy with fresh fruit and drinks waiting for you by the elevator before you immerse into your room.

Burgundy red corridors make a perfect prelude to the vibe of the apartments. Painted in black, they feature ultimately quirky textile patterns, interesting artworks, and beautifully scented toiletries from Meraki to enjoy a self-care ritual in the marble bathroom. The comfortable king size beds might make you want to stay late in bed but we’re sure the perspective of an early breakfast at the Konsthallen restaurant downstairs will be a good enough motivation.

The resto-bar concept is part of what makes Backstage so unique. The hotel’s strong link with the Stockholm’s cultural community adds vibrancy to the place with multiple events taking place at Konsthallen. Preserving the original architectural elements of the building, the restaurant is a true design pearl mixing painted glass door frames, eclectic tile mosaics and classic wooden & leather furnishings. Pops of color in the form of painted glass lamps and canvases reflect the artsy character of the hotel and keep it alive as there’s nothing more genuine than a place with good food & drinks packed with locals (and local creativity).
